  1. Make Your Own Greetings Cards -

Have just committed to doing this, because we have a huge family and lots of birthdays etc. Partly I wanted to do something creative and more meaningful than a bought card, and partly I was hoping to save money. I’ve stocked up on basics like cards and envelopes and a kids’ bumper pack of craft paper, but have found out that even making your own cards has been commercialised and there is a huge range of ‘must-have’ supplies you can buy. So my task is going to be to try and make cards out of recycled and found materials …

  2. Recycle Your Old Mobile -

My current mobile has worked its way through all three kids in order of seniority, and I’ve had it for a year or so, but I recently dropped it and now it keeps going dead on me, so I think it’s time to buy a new one (although if I can hang on a bit longer, I might get my daughter’s old pink one because she’s saving to buy a new one!) I think it’s time to tackle the half dozen old phones my husband still keeps in boxes under the bed, too!

  3. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

I do try, honest, but I don’t always remember to take my own bags with me, particularly when shopping in town. It’s such a simple thing to do, and can make such a difference, that I’m going to keep on trying, but harder from now on!

  4. Buy Nothing on Buy Nothing Day (November 26th) -

Sadly didn’t check my emails until a day too late, when I’d already spent Buy Nothing Day doing lots of shopping – new school shoes, food, a few Christmas ‘bargains’. I am trying not to go mad this Christmas though, not spending so much and also buying green prezzies where possible, or at least USEFUL prezzies rather than throw-away gimmicky stuff (yes, I have been guilty of that in the past – in fact my youngest son says this is his favourite kind of present …)

  5. Get Rid Of Some Of Your Books -

I’m having so much fun doing this it can’t be good for me. I’ve so far sold 9 books and bought 9 books – if you do the maths, you’ll know that I had to credit my account with a bit of cash to achieve this, so it hasn’t quite broken my book buying habit. It’s certainly cheaper, though, and I don’t feel quite so bad knowing that I am buying second hand, and will probably sell the book on again afterwards …

  6. Give Thanks Before A Meal -

Since embracing paganism a few years back, I’ve made a point of lighting a candle at the beginning of every meal with a silent wish to ‘bless this meal and this family’. I wonder if I could get my teenagers to pause long enough to give thanks before tucking in? They always seem to be in such a hurry …
