  1. Shop locally -

I’ve just read ‘Not on the Label’ by Felicity Lawrence, and the even better ‘Shopped’ by Joanna Blythman, so cutting down on/ avoiding Tesco is very much on my mind. I’ve had an organic veg box for a few months – chose one direct from a farm only a few miles away to cut down on food miles and to cut out a middle man. We enjoy the variety, and it’s good for making baby food for my son too, but my two-year-old is none too keen on any of the contents. I’ve started buying non-food items such as toiletries at our local shops, e.g. pharmacy, hardware store. The Tesco is very local to us, and they have also now taken over the local convenience store, so it’s not easy to come up with food alternatives. We have no other food shop locally, and the butchers closed down a number of months ago. Still, I am going to experiment with alternatives over the next couple of months.

  2. Love books? Join the library -

I’ve really got back into going to the library since the arrival of our children as it’s a great place for an outing. And since I’ve discovered that I can order any non-fiction or children’s book for free over the internet (this is in Cambridge), I’ve been hooked. Moreover, our local library has recently introduced a bin for recycling your old printer cartridges, so that’s another generous action taken care of!

  3. Dry clothes outdoors. -

Have been doing this for quite a while now, and it does give me a bit of a buzz for some reason. But now it’s getting colder it’s a bit more hard work as even after a day on the line the washing is still quite damp, and freezing cold with it.

  4. Send a Child a Christmas Box -

Have done this with my daughter for the last couple of years. It may not be ‘developmentally sound’ but a gift is a gift, and a source of joy to most (all?) children. It’s been good for my daughter, now three, as a means of understanding a bit more about what life is like for a significant proportion of the world’s children.
