  1. Give Thanks Before A Meal -

In regard to “what we eat is often provided by people who have very little compared to us,” I’ve read that the sufferings of the poor “often cry out to us from our dinner plates.” Saying grace blesses those who labored to bring us our meal AND reminds us to, whenever possible, make conscious choices about the food we buy.

  2. Shower More, Bath Less -

In the states, we are not big bath-takers, but, when I shower, I always get wet and then turn off the water while I lather up and shave – thinking of and praying for all the people in third world countries for whom clean water is a luxury. Then I turn the water back on to rinse off. it is a bit chilly in the winter, admittedly, but so be it!

  3. Turn Off The Tap When Brushing Your Teeth -

We turn off the water while we soap up our hands when washing them, too. It quickly becomes second nature! And of course, we never let the water run when rinsing dishes. Amazing how little water you can use when you are conscious of it!

  4. Start A Generous blog or journal -

This will be a challenge for me – which means it is exactly what I need to concentrate on! I am generous in thought but often have trouble following through in giving away my things, my time, my money. Keeping a journal will spur me on to LIVE, not just think, generously. Great idea – THANKS!!

  5. Choose to have one meat-free day a week in your home -

So many reasons to go vegetarian – I did it 20 some years ago. there is no end to wonderful vegetarian recipes – two of my favorite cookbooks are from the UK! Since I’m the cook, Matt eats veggie, too – even most of the time when we eat out!

  6. Compost Your Leftovers -

A 28 year composter and organic gardener. Being vegetarian, composting, buying in bulk, and recycling leaves less than one kitchen-size trash bag of waste per week.

  7. Take A Mug To Work - don't use plastic -

I gave Matt an insulated mug for Valentines Day to use for his near-sacred weekend post-run trips to Starbucks… will save at least 2 paper cups a week, not a lot, but better than none at all. And bringing your own mug to Starbucks gets a 10 cent discount. He also issued everyone a ceramic mug at his office and buys no disposable cups. same for the school i work in – we all bring our own mugs.
