  1. Slow Down, Calm Down (Stick to the speed limit) -

After 2 speeding tickets in the space of a year, thought I’d better do this. Should point out that in the previous 13 years of driving I had never got a single one, but hopefully now I’ll never get another.

  2. Give Your Unwanted / Unworn Clothes To Charity -

Helped that the local council started doing roadside collections. We sorted bags of old clothes out that had been stored in the attic when we first took up this action. Now it’s only an occasional action, but as I have a separate set of clothes for summer and winter, with one lot being stored away while the other is in use, it’s something to think about when I swap them over.

  3. Buy A Copy of Change the World for a Fiver -

Did this when the year first started. Don’t seem to have got round to reading it though….

  4. Recycle Your Old Mobile -

We picked a Fonebak envelope in Body Shop yesterday. Apparently we can just post it.

  5. Get a water butt! -

Have not been on website for ages, and am sposed to be doing other things now! We were talking about doing this only yesterday, so will start looking round soon – probably when I next get paid

  6. Dry clothes outdoors. -

Don’t have a tumble drier, so no choice! Love the smell of washing when it’s brought in from outside. Have a Sheila Maid in the kitchen (one of those wooden racks you hang from the ceiling) which I use in the winter and when wet.

  8. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

To be honest, I think this was my very first action, but wasn’t listed on my profile. We bought some of the 10p bags in Tesco, and a stronger one from M and S. I also have a boycott Proctor and Gamble bag in my handbag, which Uncaged Campaigns sent me – it has lasted for ages.

  9. Put Eco Balls in your Washing Machine -

I looked at these in Lakeland a couple of weeks ago, but decided against because one of the ingredients in the pellets is sodium lauryl sulfate which is derived from palm oil. I don’t know if all eco-balls are the same – I saw some on Goodness Direct which had different ingredients, but I didn’t know what the ingredients were, so was going to research it. Anyway – the thing about palm oil is that I’m trying to cut down on it where possible due to the effect plantations have on orangutans – I want the next generation growing up being able to see orangutans, not just read about them in books.

  10. Put Eco Balls in your Washing Machine -

I have tried using soap nuts, which I quite like, but Marky is convinced they give everything a horrible apply smell, especially towels. However, noted Z’s comments above, and maybe we need to give the machine a long overdue spring clean!!

  11. Switch to Green Household Cleaners -

Had a quick look at the website this action links to – word of caution re using vinegar on mold – avoid using on bathroom tiles as it may take the grout off. Teatree oil in water much better idea, and as Sonia says – works really well.

  12. Uncommon courtesy -

Read this with interest. I used to go to the Church where the “Polite Vicar” was the minister before he retired. Ian Gregory founded the Campaign for Courtesy in 1986. He became quite well known for it, and even has a pub named after him!! (The Polite Vicar) For more information see www.campaignforcourtesy.org.uk.

  13. Get a vest (or two) -

As an alternative to a vest I discovered belly huggers, which are reall useful if breast-feeding, and that’s what they are designed for, but have continued to use mine beyond breast feeding, as I am quite “nesh” as we say in my part of the world, and it keeps your back warm! It is also good if you want to wear something with an neckline that might expose a vest. Basically a belly hugger is like a boob tube only it goes below your boobs. Can’t remember where I got it now – on line – but found the details in “Imperfectly Natural Baby and Toddler” by Janey Lee Grace.
