  1. Become A Blood Donor -

They say it only takes 10 minutes – well the actual donation may oinly take this long, but you do need to allow about an hour for the whole process I am afraid! a large part of this is taken up with waiting to be processed before the donation… Andrew

  4. Put A Save-A-Flush Device In Your Cistern -

I put one in our cistern – and when the plumber came to do something they removed it and did not put it back…. Now I have to get a replacement. Be warned, and keep an ey on them if you have to have them attend to your loos!

  5. Improve your home's energy efficiency -

Sadly (as far as this is concerned) the house we live in is not our, and i suspect the Diocesewould take a dim view of us doing very much along these line – and anyway they have already done most of them! I do keep turning down the thermostat surreptitiosly, only to have ceertain members of the family complain it is too cold….

  6. Switch To Good (Green Or Socially Resonsible) Energy -

npower have a tarif called ‘juice ’ for which they say they guarantee to put 1 Kw of ‘green’ electricity onto the grid for every Kw consumed – and it costs the same as their stadard enectricity tarif.

  7. Become A Blood Donor -

    Just given my 50th donation…

  8. Energy Efficient Cooking -

Following up on Kathryn’s comment earlier (as chief cook & bottle-washer) I can confirm that it does work…! We – or should i say ‘I’? – now do this with pasta (& noodles for the stir-frys). Will try for other boiled items over the next few weeks, but suspect that for brown rice it might get cold before the rice is cooked :-(

  9. Turn Off The Tap When Brushing Your Teeth -

If you are in a house like ours where the water takes a while to ‘run hot’ why not use this water to brush your teeth with rather than using the ‘cold’ tap at all? – It does rely on no-one else having used that basin for about the last half hour (and on you doing your teeth BEFORe washing!)

  10. Dry clothes outdoors. -

Been doing it for years – and using an airing cupboard when the weather is not condusive to outside lines… – though I do have to admit to resorting to a fan heater in the airing cupboard from time to time (on a low thermostatic setting) when it is wet outside but too warm for the heating to be on… In our own house we did not need to as we were able to drill large holes in the top & bottom of the cupboard door to allow air to circulate, but we are in diocessan accomodation now and they take rather a dim view of that sort of thing….

  11. Save Paper and Packaging: Dump Your Junk Mail -

Every little helps indeed – to kill the post office! I agree with your principle, but it is a huge source of revenue for the somewhat beleagured rural post offices, which are often litterally life-line for elderly people in the country-side, so I do have rather mixed feelings about this action. Also, from what Karin says if might mean you do not get the letter from the electoral register asking you to confirm your registration to VOTE

  12. Can't ditch your car? Switch it! (To LPG) -

Please note that NOT ALL cars will get a reduction in road tax. ONLY those which are on a fairly short list AND which are converted by one of the selection of garages aproved FOR THAT MODEL qualify – but it is still worth it! The fuel is much cheeper a well as being far better for the environment and the car itself.

  13. More tea vicar? (Don't overfill your kettle.) -

As I am sure is the case for many of us, I’ve been doing this for YEARS!

  14. Give Your Old Specs A New Life -

Veronica, If you look at the listing it says: (Broken/damaged spectacles and bifocals/varifocals cannot be accepted.).
This is why I can not commit to this action – all my old specs frames are knackered – otherwise I would still be using them!
For future ref though (on the off-chance that I DO manage not to break the frame!) do the lenses have to be free from scratches as well?

  15. Keep The Warmth In Your House -

Did all I could on this LONG ago!

Hi – I am someone who is not impressed by (as I see it) the very minor differences between the denominations.I’m currently worshipping in the C of E (largely because my wife was not happy with the Roman church into which I was baptised) – since she is now a priest, I think she was probably right! I have been restoring antique clocks for just over 25 years – most of them self-employed. We live in Stroud (for the next few of years until Kathryn moves parish). As you will see from her entry we have three children; Lucinda, Giles & Jack.
