  1. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

I’ve been refusing plastic bags for a quite some time (even before I joined the generous community) and I almost always have one of those fantastic Waitrose ‘Bags for Life’ in my handbag. They are brilliant and by far the best long term bags that any supermarket supplies plus they have nice designs particularly at Christmas. You can use them for anything (and I do) eg sitting on wet grass, carrying things in, I even took one around Machu Picchu…my motto is ‘always carry a Waitrose bag’. This wasn’t meant to be an advert but I have road tested a few. But seriously this is important and worth the effort to carry a few plastic bags with you when you go to the supermarket (oops…local shop even).

  2. Energy Efficient Cooking -

I have done this with rice previously ( the other advantage of this is that it avoids the scenario where you forget about it and the next thing you know you have burnt the pan when it boils dry) but I will try this with other things too now.

  3. Choose to have one meat-free day a week in your home -

Like a few others I already eat very little meat, even less in recent months since I have been living with friends who are more consistently meat free than me. I always enjoy eating vegies, and pulses are in the top ten good foods to eat. Brown rice is also very nutritious – I do love it – and it makes a meal more substantial. I will commit to trying to buy organic or free range wherever possible during lent if I do have a ‘chicken’ moment (I haven’t eaten red meat for as long as I can remember…).

  4. Shower More, Bath Less -

Another easy one as I have a shower not a bath in my bit of the house and I don’t usually take very long except when I have to wash my hair (which is long) and I’m not going to cut my hair in the interests of being generous! Even when I do have easy access to a bath I tend not to slow down enough to think about having a bath. Will commit to trying not to linger to long under the lovely hot water…

  5. Switch off and unplug appliances and chargers -

I’ve just realised I have been doing this wrong -I had been diligently unplugging the phone from the charger but now I realise you have to go one step further and turn it off at the wall if you want to save those emissions! Have now started doing this although have had a few false charging moments where I have plugged the phone in to a charger that was switched off. Still, I will no doubt get the hang of this one before too long…
