  1. 'Waste Not, Want Not' -

we try to plan our meals each week. it means we are able to know what we have and make sure we eat it all although we often buy slightly more than we need so that we can make enough to freeze some and then we have pot luck meals (included in our weekly plan to enable a cookfree night) so one of us might have chilli, another bolognese and someone else has macaroni cheese! and anything else is composted (except meat products but these are rarely binned, usually just the toddlers leftover – let’s face it who wants to eat what the toddler didn’t….)

  2. Give Thanks Before A Meal -

i get the kids to think about where their meal came from and thank those that provided it – the farmer, the land, the guy that got it from the farmer to where we bought it etc (hopefully this year i’ll be getting most of the thanks re the veg!) the girls especially make a point of thanking the chickens whenever we take their eggs. it feels only right to say thanks to all those that provided

  3. Recycle Your Stuff -

we’re lucky enough to have kerbside recycling, a garden large enough to take 3 compost bins, a pretty active local freecycle list and a fairly decent recycling centre locally. our local council also has a ‘scrapstore’ called ‘flotsam & jetsam’ where they give away the best of the recyclable stuff – we’ve had fabric for various projects, including the making of lots of fabric carrier bags, envelopes, computer paper for the kids to draw on, crafty items for the girls to put together pressies for the grandparents and the like

  4. Start An Allotment - Or Half A Plot -

we’ve started a ‘landshare’ agreement with neighbours down the road. they’ve offered us space in their front garden for 3 raised beds. the plan is to split produce 70:30, we have another offer from a chap quite a bit further away, due to the distance (still walkable) we’ll be making sure we only plant low maintenance crops.
