Hurrah, have done it! Off to a flying start ;)

  2. Organise Your Money (What You Want To Give Away) -

Just set this up as well – brilliant.

  3. See An Inconvenient Truth. -

Saw this last year and thought it was amazing and yet very disturbing… I wish everyone on the planet would see it, that would really help to change the world x

  4. Shop locally -

We’re working on this one and doing pretty well. Have been receiving Abel & Cole’s weekly box (and other bits from them) for over 5 years now, also we get together with friends and buy in bulk from Infinity Foods (a healthfood wholesaler) and I’ve also recently discovered the fab website Goodness Direct, they are brilliant. We are almost entirely supermarket-free now, which I feel is pretty good going especially as we have a snack-mad 2 year old ;)

  5. Shop Small (Buy local, Switch from the Supermarket) -

We spend a small fortune at our local independent health food shop and I make an effort to only buy things like newspapers, magazines etc from corner shops not WHSmith. We frequent our local deli/cafes and always choose small independent businesses over chains/multinationals if we can. Clothes come from small fairtrade retailers or we buy second hand from charity shops.

  6. Don't just recycle, Freecycle -

We’re doing this and loving it. So nice to get grateful emails from people who we’ve freecycled our stuff to. It really is fab and I highly recommend it. Decluttering your life doesn’t get any easier than freecycle ;)

  7. Compost Your Leftovers -

We’ve had a compost bin for over 5 years and it’s great – but a wormery is even better! Worms eat cooked leftovers eg bread, pasta etc – when you have a toddler there is often a saddening amount of uneaten food, so now the worms eat it and they make lovely liquid feed for our garden plants, bargain!

  8. Dry clothes outdoors. -

We very rarely use a tumble dryer, even in winter and even though our son is in cloth nappies. Summer is ideal for outside drying and everything smells so fresh

  9. Buy Presents That Make A Difference -

I do the Oxfam Unwrapped/World vision gift thing for those who I know will appreciate/understand it, but unfortunately I still have a few friends who expect “tangible” presents…I am going to keep trying to wean them onto the charity gift!

  10. Love books? Join the library -

Our local libraries are fantastic – the children’s library (in its own building) is incredible. My 2 year old has been a member since not long after he was born and he adores choosing his books. I use the library for travel books, cookery and the occasional novel.

  11. Choose to have one meat-free day a week in your home -

Easy one for me – been veggie for almost 17 years and my 2 year old son has been veggie since birth ;)

  12. Go Local - Join A Food Cooperative -

A few of us get together to order wholesale from Infinity Foods. It’s much cheaper than in the health food shop although I still go there for things I don’t want to buy in bulk. Also I love the goodnessdirect site and my weekly Abel and Cole box. I wouldn’t go back to buying from supermarkets again now.

  13. Energy Efficient Cooking -

What an ingenious idea. I’m always after tips like this for saving energy – can’t wait to try it out with tomorrow’s pasta dinner ;)

  14. Walking ... It's The Way To Go -

I do this – only use the car for long journeys, we either walk or get the bus everywhere (including 2 year old sometimes in buggy but walking as much as possible)

  15. Give Your Unwanted / Unworn Clothes To Charity -

I’ve been doing this for a while – very satisfying to declutter and help charitable causes at the same time ;)

  16. Choose to have one meat-free day a week in your home -

Easy for me too – veggie for over 17 years and my almost 3 year old has been veggie since conception ;)

  17. Stop Taking Plastic Bags From Shops -

Getting there with this one – I now always go to the shops with cloth bags and old plastic bags. Generally I put everything under the buggy so there’s no need at all for bags ;)

  18. Recycle your old bras -

Am so pleased about this – I have so many maternity and breastfeeding bras that I will soon be handing over to Oxfam, really glad they will be going to a good home ;)

  19. Make your own bread -

Been doing this since 2003 – I rarely ever buy bread and can’t imagine not having my own home made bread ;)

  20. Start An Allotment - Or Half A Plot -

Just got our allotment in February and very excited to be starting with it. Hoping for lots of spuds, broad beans and carrots – fingers crossed for decent weather ;)

  21. Ladies: Consider a mooncup! -

Been using one for over 5 years (although admittedly have had 2 babies and many months of period free breastfeeding since then!) and they’re fab. Definitely take a couple of cycles to get the hang of, and I personally still have to use pads as well as I have heavy periods, but they really are fab and I highly recommend them.

  22. Get a vest (or two) -

Have spent a small fortune on thermal vests, long johns etc for the family this winter but it’s so worth it and wonderful to be cosy without needing to put the heating on – so it will save us a fortune in the long run anyway ;)

  23. Make Your Own Greetings Cards -

Been doing this for a couple of years – it’s especially fun making cards with my children and I know our friends/family really treasure them, as opposed to the mass market ones that have absolutely zero personality.
Christmas cards are easy using previous years’ cards. I buy thin card in various colours from Green Stationery company.

  24. Shower More, Bath Less -

I very rarely bath nowadays, showers are so much quicker and easier, and of course it’s kinder to the planet’s limited water supply too ;)

a married eco-mum of 2. Our family tries to tread lightly on the earth by reusing/recycling as much as possible, home composting, growing a little produce/herbs/fruit, limiting our car use, eating vegetarian food (locally/organically produced where possible, fairtrade coffee/chocolate etc for non-local products), using cloth nappies, buying second hand or fairtrade toys/clothing and donating as much as we can afford to small, ethically-minded charities.
