Well, you know what they say, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”! Nice that one can reuse and recycle before one reduces.
Totally agree with Bagpuss though – surely an opt-out system would be better.

Have just joined Generous – yay – and thought I would start with an action I’ve been considering for some time. Looking at the actions list, it seems to be a bit of an amalgamation of others’ good ideas, especially CC, who’s suggested a more sustained period of ‘Buy Nothing Day’. Basically, after making an effort to buy fairtrade/organic for the past couple of years (and doing pretty well), I think I’d like to go one step further and commit to buying nothing but essentials during 2007. Why? Well…
a) a growing awareness of that little ‘high’ consumerism can give, normally followed by that feeling of “Do I really need this”! b) knowing that around here there are more CDs than I listen to, books I haven’t yet read, clothes I don’t get around to wearing… c) while I enjoy crafts, I tend to buy yet more bits and pieces to complete a project, especially when making gifts, rather than being creative with what I have. d) a growing discomfort with all the ads and offers and leaflets and everything else that goes with our consumer culture – “Because I’m worth it” etc. e) the environment. ‘Nuff said.
Of course, the term ‘essentials’ is open to interpretation but contemplating its meaning is part of the task, right?
Anyway, that’s what I’m doing and I’d love to hear from others with experiences, tips, challenging questions, etc.
Oh, and by the way, no, I haven’t stocked up on things in advance (!) – apart from buying my sister’s birthday present for early January. And no, I haven’t bought Judi Levine’s book – I couldn’t buy a book called Not Buying It!
