Drive five miles less a week

Drive-less

ActOnCO2 is encouraging us to reduce the distance we drive by just five miles a week.

With more than half of all car trips being five miles or less, and with those journeys accounting for approximately a fifth of household car CO2 emissions, then it seems like a good move. Especially when they estimate that collectively we could save around 2.70 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

This is more easy to achieve than you may think, but does involve some forward planning. We’ve got our main general supplies (supermarket) shop down to once a month saving 3 trips to the supermarket each month.

Always walk to the local store and tie in visits to the post office etc with other trips out. Plan a circular tour to get all your errands done once a week or month as required rather than endlessly ‘just popping out’.

Investigate local places to walk for exercise rather than drive for miles first before walking.

If you work in an office, have you also thought about whether you can do some of your work at home? Anyone can ask their employer for ‘flexible’ work arrangements and this could reduce your amount of driving and increase your work productivity, as well as saving you money in fuel costs. Visit

I’ve just moved house and down-sized to an apartment near the town centre nearer to where my work is based. I’ve saved money, I’m using less fuel for heating, I can now walk to 90% of my work and leisure and to the train station. And I am happier.

I drive for work and was shocked by last months mileage. I was driving back to base between appointments because it’s familiar. I’m going to be brave and look for other spots I can ‘hot desk’ (find a computer) to cut down my miles and time travelling. win win
