I went through a phase of thinking the band didn’t mean anything. That was after plugging bands with it on their website to come and play at Greenbelt and getting the snub. But I’ve come back to the idea again now. Visual signifiers do mean something. Even if wearing bands this is year has gone a little fashion crazy.

My band never comes off, since I replaced my tatty cotton one with a less environmentally friendly but durable plastic one.
Does anyone know if they are now being sourced ethically? (there was some fuss about this earlier in the year).

How do I add comments at the moment, while I’m waiting for my application to finish being processed? Someone asked on the ‘wear your white band’ action whether they were available ethically, and I wanted to let her know that Traidcraft sell a fairtrade cotton wristband made by Craft Aid in Mauritius. I know this because I work for them! And as soon as the MPH wristbands came on the market we started sourcing a fairtrade one, but it obviously takes a few months for them to be made and shipped. If I can’t post commments til I can log in, can someone post this on my behalf?

Mine has stayed on since I took part in the “march of the Dibleys” (assorted clergywomen plus Dawn French) back in January. We do seem to get through them rather as a family, but that’s good too…and even my very non switched on church has bought a good 100 from me over the months.

Wear a silicone one – ethically made by oxfam but plastic so not so good there I suppose – I bought about 10 fabric ones and gave them away gradually. They have been a really good talking point as there are still people out there who have never heard of the campaign!

Worn out 2 bands now. I reckon my plastic World Vision one is indestructible! Just as well because I can’t get it off, not that I want to, it’s such a good talking point.

... Ken abseiled and put a banner on our church tower and challenged other churches to do the same and they did! Thank you to all who took up the challenge.
Whenever we have given talks, taken assemblies etc. and encouraged others to wear the wristband we have said “please do two things – 1 Find out more about at least one of the three aims of MPH and 2 What are you going to do about it?”

Mike, was the band you found irritating plastic or cotton? If it was plastic, be extravagant and buy a cotton one, cotton is less likely to irritate your skin.

We got involved in MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY as a Partnership of churches at the beginning of 2005. It was exciting to see how much energy could be generated by working together and focussing our communal energy on a campaign like this – which is one reason why we are now trying to get our congregations interested in Generous. I’m still wearing my band, but I’ve noticed that other people have stopped – since it is no longer such a high profile cause(?). There will come a point at which it will be counter productive to wear the band (I think) but I’m not sure when this will come… My hope is that there will be another opportunity (perhaps with a different name) to make progress on the ongoing issues related to extreme poverty. These pushes seem to work best (and gain most support) if they come in waves. TN

We got really animated watching the Vicar of Dibley episode last year, and have all been wearing our MPH bands since then. We also took part as a family in making a big band around Banbury during the G8 summit, which was brilliant as plenty of people asked what we were doing and then joined us. This serves really as a fresh resolution to keep doing it!

Have kind of lost touch with Generous over the last few months (gave away my computer – didn’t resubscribe to the e-mail list), but the other day I got a threatening sounding e-mail asking why I’d not signed up for any actions so I’m having a bit of a blitz and signing up to ones I committed to under the old site. I did this for a bit, then I went to Bosnia doing youth and mission work and one of the kids snapped my band. Are they still selling the bands these days? MPH having been a 2005 focused campain an’ all…

April 2006 and still wearing my band… noticed in a National Inquirer photo that Brad Pitt isn’t anymore. nor are most of those celebrities. or most other strangers i pass in the street. what to do? will this campaign emerge again in a few years time in a new guise? i will still carry on wearing mine proudly, but i worry that impact, impetus, interest, involvement has waned or even stopped. feel quite despondent

Still wearing mine too in December 2006! Did feel dispondent but have been asked about it quite a number of times recently and it opens up an excellent opportunity to talk to people about the continuing unfair trade issues.

I’ve just got round to washing mine. Perhaps I should start wearing it again. I got out of the habit because it was grey and horrible. Not sure why I didn’t wash it sooner, though.
